EIA Coggins
Yearly Blood Testing

The Coggins test detects the presence of Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA), a deadly disease that is spread through insect bites. Because there are positive cases of EIA every year in Minnesota, we believe every horse should be tested annually. Horses that contract the disease are required by federal law to be euthanized or placed in life long quarantine away from other horses. There is currently no vaccine to protect horses from this disease. If you are traveling, you may be required to have proof of a negative Coggins test within the last six months.

We have made special arrangements with our laboratory to add a chemistry panel to our Coggins test at a minimal cost to you. This test will evaluate liver and kidney functions, blood protein, and blood sugar levels with the same blood sample on which the Coggins test is performed. This additional test is available for all horses, but is particularly encouraged for horses over the age of 10.

If your horse is over the age of 15, we recommend annual blood work to check red blood cells, white cells, platelets, blood sugar levels, thyroid hormone levels, and organ function (CBC, t4 and Full Chemistry Panel).
